Ultra Lightweight Sheep Rifle

Being huge fans of the Accuracy International rifles with their adjustable stocks, quick change barrels and ability to go anywhere in the world, but not huge fans of the 20+ lb weight that those rifles bring with them, we wanted to create a rifle with the dependability, accuracy and adjustability of the platform, but in lightweight form.

Modern traditional stock rifles are getting better every day but they require precise bedding to stop any fluctuation due to environment, and most importantly, once you add the capabilities to have an adjustable cheek riser, folding mechanism and tripod and bipod attachments, they weigh more than modern chassis based systems.

Anyone that engages in sheep hunts knows the large investment required in money, as well as time and physical fitness required for successful hunts, so we build our ULWSR (Ultra-Lightweight Sheep Rifle) with a few key factors in mind:

  • Adjustable comb to accommodate different height faces and scopes

  • Option for an adjustable length of pull

  • All adjustments have to be field adjustable but also semi-permanent, so once fixed, they stay fixed until you decide to move them

  • Modern attachment capable, for bipods, tripods etc. We really like the Spartan Precision system for this.

  • Most importantly, these rifles need to shoot. In order to do that we use receivers from known excellent suppliers such as Lone Peak, we like and use both the regular steel and titanium receivers from their Fuzion line.

We use Bartlein blanks for these rifles, if maximum weight saving is your goal, then the Bartlein carbon fiber offerings are exceptional.

By using the LPA receivers, this also allows us to adopt a ‘pre-fit’ system for the barrel. If you ever want to change caliber within the same size action, say from 300WM to 300PRC or 300NM then you simply spin off the barrel and replace it with your new one. This means a lifetime of use of the rifle with no gunsmith needed.

For the chassis, we prefer the XLR Element. This is available in magnesium for ultra-lightness and is incredibly modular. You can add up to 9lbs of weights onto the chassis for general shooting or competition work, and then remove it all for hunting season.

As avid hunters, especially mountain hunts for Elk, Sheep and Goats, we use these rifles on our hunts and can talk to you about the ins-and-outs of the system as a whole.
